Chicken Club Collaboration
Monday, 10 June 2024
One of the most involved projects for our charity this year has been taking some of our outdoor space and turning it into an involved chicken coop - an idea that has presented such a myriad of opportunities for different groups within our community. We've been very lucky to have had money donated from Karbon Homes to make sure that we can could create an amazing space for everyone to enjoy, chicken and humans alike!
We also recently had a greenhouse donated from a local allotment association, so that means that we can plant and grow plants too, which is another great activity for the children, plus something that will be a great educational piece on our property.
The main aim of the chickens will be to let the children in our community be able to bond, and experience responsibility, communication skills and routine. A lesser known thing about chickens is that they are often used as emotional support animals for children who have anger issues, or sensory issues. We are so excited for them to be used for each child's individual needs, as well as collecting eggs and creating education in our Chicken Club that we're hoping to run in the school holidays! Don't worry though, we haven't started our Club yet, so once we are opening spaces we will post that on our socials media pages which you can follow here Facebook Instagram to make sure your child or young adult can be included. We are happy to accept any child into the club, and ask that if your child is SEND that you may stay with them during the club.
To make this project even more involved throughout our whole charity, we have also been asking the men who come to our Men's Walk and Talk, also known as the Gents, to volunteer to build the space for the chickens. They have worked so hard over the last few months, making sure it is fox-proofed and well built, as well as doing research together on the best way to do everything. Les Forman is the head volunteer of the group and has been taking photos of the progress, some of which we have below. It seems to have been a great bonding activity for the group, and really has shown what a great group they are when they work together. We're all so proud of them, especially Les!
If you have anything you would be able to donate then please do get in touch with us via this website, or via email on [email protected] - we'd be so excited to increase our outdoor pursuits even more and make as much of a difference for our community as we can. If you would like to place a child into our Chicken Club then please also get in touch to find out when you can join in the fun!
